Home Remedies to remove Tan and Sunburn

Its no secret that the Indian summers can be very harsh and unforgiving. No matter how much we try to protect ourselves from the sun, we end up getting a little bit of tan in the summers. And if you’ve been on a vacation, you’re sure to come back with a tan that makes your skin look ashy and dull for weeks to come! Today I’m sharing some of my tried and tested home recipes that can help you get rid of tan and sunburn with minimal expense!

1. Freshly grated potato

Grate a potato and squeeze the grated bits to extract the juice. Apply this juice all over the affected area using a cotton ball and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. This will give instant relief from sunburn and help remove tan within a few days of regular use. Potato juice contains an enzyme called catecholase that is known to lighten mild skin discoloration. My mum swears by this home remedy!

2. Lemon-Yogurt Mask

Lemons are a powerful source of Vitamin C (present as Ascorbic acid) which is one of the best known ingredients for brightening skin and removing dark spots. Vitamin C is also needed by the body for producing collagen. Yogurt contains lactic acid which is an alpha-hydroxy acid and aids exfoliation by removing dead skin cells. The combination of this potent brightening agent with a natural exfoliator helps in lightening sun-induced spots and with regular use, you would notice a glow on your skin. Some people like to dab fresh lemon juice directly on the skin but I find it a harsh and drying in its pure form. Mixing it with yogurt makes it more tolerable on the skin and you get the goodness of the lactic acid as well. If you have access to fresh buttermilk, use that instead of yogurt. Buttermilk contains 3-4% lactic acid while yogurt only contains ~ 1%.

3. Orange Peel Powder

Just like lemons, oranges contain a fair amount of Vitamin C and just like all the fruits, the peel is actually a highly nutritious part of the fruit. Dried orange peel powder can be used as a base for face packs and ubtans. Depending on your skin type, you can add some rose water, honey, yogurt or milk to create a paste and apply this on the face for 15 minutes. Regular use not only helps in brightening the skin but helps fight acne & blemishes while balancing out excessively oily skin. You can prepare the orange peel powder yourself by sun drying orange peel and grinding it to a powder. Or you could buy it – I picked up the Etheric Orange Peel Powder from Amazon and I really like it.

  2. I have prepared Orange Peel Powder,. so I will be using it,.. I have oily acne prone skin so do I need to add rose water or honey ?

    1. You could use Rosewater or even fresh cucumber juice. If you have cold pressed Aloe Vera juice, that’ll work as well.

  3. Loving the new look of the blog, just love it.

I have tried and use Potato one out of these, one more thing which works for me is Tomato 🙂

  4. I use tomato and it does wonders. All you need to do is take a slice and massage it nicely on your face. Then leave for 15-20 minutes and rinse.

  5. Lemon might not work on sensitive skins. It leaves red spots. Its better to try on a smaller area. I however have another suggestion. Gram flour, Honey, Turmeric and curd as it works well on me.

A nice improvement on your blog appearance. I felt your previous post title was not visible as it was overlaying on a dark header background. Now It looks clean, simple and flattering!

    1. Thanks Shalini. Yes there was an issue with the title, generally in cases where adblock was turned on. Glad you like the new look.

  6. I love orange peel powder they work perfectly for oily skin. I have never tried ready made orange powder, because my mother use to make it and store it for her.:)
