Best Sunscreens available in India | Skincare Review

Hi everyone! Today’s post is all about sunscreens and the different options available in the Indian market. The suns rays can cause a lot of visible and invisible damage to the skin. The visible spectrum i.e UVB rays cause burning that shows itself in the form of tanning and sunburn. The invisible spectrum containing the UVA rays causes ageing by facilitating free radical chain reactions and breakdown of collagen. To protect our skin sufficiently from the sun’s harmful rays, we need a sunscreen that has broad spectrum protection i.e protection from UVA (mentioned as PA+++ on the packaging) and from UVB rays as well (mentioned as SPFxx, where xx is a number).

The number that follows the SPF basically helps you determine the duration for which the sunscreen protects your skin. For Indian skin, we can assume a factor of 8 and multiply it with the SPF number to get an estimate of the minutes of sun protection. So an SPF30 sunscreen gives about 8×30 = 240 minutes i.e. 4 hours of sun protection. If you’re going to be in the sun for a long time, make sure to go for a high SPF sunscreen that contains adequate PA protection as well.

Apart from the protection factor, we need to choose a sunscreen that has a consistency suited for one’s skin type. If you have dry skin, a hydrating cream or lotion would work well for you, while oilier skinned people need to go for lighter textures like gels or mattifying lotions. This is a really important factor because if the sunscreen doesn’t suit your skin type and doesn’t feel good to use, you would inevitably skip this very important step in your skincare routine! So do pay attention to the consistency and texture while choosing a sun protection product. Now lets talk about some of the sunscreens currently available in the Indian market. I’ve briefly reviewed 9 sunscreens below.

  • feels mildly moisturizing but not heavy, contains no scent
  • purely physical (mineral) sunscreen, good for sensitive skin

          1. Hi, there aren’t many options available in the Indian market that you can buy in stores. I’d suggest you go for Real Techniques online.

  2. My all time fav is Clinique Sheer city block SPF 40. When its a mineral sunscreen the sun protection factor is pretty great.
Works great for sensitive skin and the tint is awesome to give it some light coverage!

  3. Great compilation Ankita and nicely summarised. I am using the Neutrogena Ultrasheer Dry Touch sunblock SPF 50+ and I really like it. I have oily skin and the sunscreen would make it little shiny but nothing which can’t be controlled with loose powder. And it is effective as well. I would give Just Herbs sunscreen a try as I really like their products.

  4. I have used lotus and lakme sunscreen yet and though I have dry skin n lotus works really well in summer for oilfree look I want to know which sunscreen to use for winter as lakme sunscreens for dry skin get into my eyes and it irritates.Any suggestions?

  5. I have used lakme and lotus sunscreens yet and though I have dry skin lotus matte spf40 works really well with lotus alphamoist moisturizer.lakme sunscreen for dry skin gets into my eyes and irritates my eyes so I stopped using it.Thanks to your reviews that I use lotus sunscreen ☺☺

  6. great post! sunscreen is overlooked by so many of us and yet it’s such an important step in skincare.. i use a nivea sunscreen at the moment, which is functional but i’d like to the give loreal one a go once i’m done with this, it sounds great because i have oily skin! the vichy one looks promising as well, i’m using the vichy night detox cream right now (bought it after reading your review on it!) and it’s very light on the skin x

  7. I was waiting for this post since you posted a picture on Instagram.
    Great and very informative one.
I have now realized that only mineral sunscreens suit my skin. Thanks for recommending Clinique’s sunscreen Ankita.

      1. I tried clinique’s sample. I liked it but I was thinking to give Avene a try too. Could u plz suggest between these two?

        1. Hi Sneha, have a look at Avene’s ingredients. If its only a titanium dioxide or zinc oxide based sunscreen, its purely physical and should work for you.

  8. Very useful post Ankita! I loved the lotus herbals 3-in-1 matte and La Roche-posay for my skin. I also love Avene ultralight hydrating sunscreen, which I am using right now.

  9. Could you please specify a sunscreen to be used in monsoon season. It makes sense for Lotus matte sunblock to be used in summer and any hydrating sunscreen in winters. But what about monsoon. Please help.

  10. I am currently using the banana boat sport SPF 50. its great for my combi skin as its really light and also leaves a subtle glow on the skin. Sadly not available in India but I stock on it from Dubai. its a must try!

    1. Hi, the Lotus mist is quite heavy and more of a spray than a mist. You can’t use it to retouch your sunscreen but the L’Oreal one will work for touch ups without ruining your makeup.

  11. You seemed to have missed Lashield Sunscreen. It is very nice, dermatologicaly tested. And trust me, its oil free gives a matte with glowy look.

  12.
