Best Moisturizers for Combination-Oily Skin | Skincare Review

Ever since I started taking care of my skin, its been a challenge to find the perfect moisturizer for oily skin. For the longest time, I did not even realise that my oily skin needed a moisturizer. Many women are under the misconception that if they have oily skin, they do not need moisturizer. The truth is, everyone needs moisturizer, you just need the texture and formula suited for your skin type! Moisture/Hydration is different from oil/sebum and if your skin is oily, it doesn’t imply that it is hydrated. Low levels of moisture in the skin leads to overproduction of oil, as the skin tries to compensate for the lack of water. To maintain healthy, balanced skin, its important to hydrate the skin and not strip it dry.

Oily skinned people need to use light-weight moisturizers in the form of lotions, emulsions or gels and should stay away from heavier creams which may clog the pores and lead to pimples and blackheads. My skin oscillates between combination and oily and every once in a while, I get a few angry breakouts that refuse to budge for days. So I’ve tested out a boat load of moisturizers over the past few months and compiled this list of oily skin-friendly moisturizers. I hope you will find this compilation helpful!

Let me know your favorite moisturizers in the comments below.

  1. “The truth is, everyone needs moisturizer, you just need the texture and formula suited for your skin type!” Such a great point. And you put together a wonderful compilation! Thanks so much.

  2. For some reason , lotus alpha moist broke me out terribly 🙁 have loved the Clean n Clear , Vitamin C glow boost and Simple sensitive skin Moisturizer 🙂
Ankita, wish you could do a update skin care and hair care routine .. 😍

    1. Sorry to hear the Lotus one broke you out. My skin care routine has been changing constantly since I’m testing new products all the time but as soon as I settle on something, I’ll do a routine post or video. For hair, its pretty simple. I’m using the Moroccanoil Smoothing Shampoo and conditioner and from time to time, I use the Rene Furterer Melaleuca Anti-Dandruff shampoo. All the of these have been reviewed here.

  3. Hey Ankita.. Beautiful compilation.I have tried Clinique Moisture Surge Gel and its Fa-b-u-l-o-u-s for oily skin. used that for the longest time.
Also the FE Aloe vera light hydrating gel has worked really well. The downside was if you do not dilute it with water its gonna give you a very stretchy feel.
The La Roche posay effaclar duo is fantastic but cannot b used like a regular moisturizer, its more like a treatment product for me!

The Clinique Dramatically different moisturizing gel is quite good but not fantastic.

    1. Hi Ishita, good to know your feedback on these. I personally love the La Roche Posay one as a moisturizer when I’m all oily and breaking out. During my Paris trip with LRP, I had the chance to take a closer look at the ingredients and the making process and they do intend it as a mattifying and purifying moisturizer for oily, blemished skin. Since you have sensitive skin, I suppose it does make more sense to use it a spot treatment.

  4. I have used quite a few from the list and I would say you did select the best. Has Clean & Clear changed their packaging. I am not able to find my staple Skin Balancing Moisturizer and now I see different packaging.

  5. A Very nice post.Wish you try to compile for normal to dry skin type. I do agree you cannot try them on your skin. Keep up the good work

  6. Such a helpful and great compilation! Loved it! I have tried the Seaweed one and the Vitamin C one by TBS; Seaweed one faired me well but somehow the Vitamin C one broke me out terribly 🙁

    xx Aditi

  7. i’m absolutely loving these posts you do lately! these mini reviews all at one place are brilliant.. i have tried the vitamin E moisture cream by the body shop and i quite like it though it still has to grow on me a bit more for me to use it everyday.. i didn’t know clean n clear have changed the packaging of their oil free moisturizer! their classic original face wash is a staple in my skincare routine x

    1. Thank you. The Vitamin E moisture cream is quite good for drier skin types. I do use it from time to time when my skin is feeling very dry.

  8. My favourite moisturiser is Clean and Clear and La Rosche Posay Effaclar Duo. Although I have noted few other moisturiser which I will give a try in near future. Ankita, please do a compilation for Scrubs as well under above categories. As my skin type is same as you have mentioned.

    1. Hi Vidishaa, I don’t use too many scrubs these except for something like Kama Ayurveda Kumkumadi or Forest Essentials Fruit Scrub from time to time. But will look into doing a post on scrubs in the future.

    1. Hi, its not drying but its not a super moisturizing one so if you have dry skin to start with and don’t have acne, I wouldn’t recommend it.

    1. You should definitely give the La Roche Posay one a try. And Clean and Clear is quite basic but good for oily skin!

  9. Hiiiii ankita we love your makeup tips. But need a tutorial for dusky/medium skin tone. Eagerly waiting for that. Please let us know some makeup tips for medium skin tone

  10. I am 18 yrs old.. I hv dry skin.. After some weeks I will start new college classes. So I want to know some affordable skin care products for my dry skin. Please help me.

  11. Your blog is my go to place before buying any makeup or skin/haircare product, your product reviews are great.
I have been a fan of body shop for years now, given my extremely oily skin their team tree mattyfying moisturiser is my saviour in summers, vitamin E aqua boost sorbet in spring-autumn and vitamin E moisturiser during winters. Not to forget the tea tree BB cream is a great foundation alternative for everyday use.
Please do a natio product review, have seen you using them in makeup tutorials but couldn’t find any review on the blog.

  12. Hi Ankita ,
I have recently ordered vitamin E aqua boost sorbet and i have combination skin (oily tea zone n normal rest) but i offen get a pimple or two on forehead area or on cheeks , which leaves marks and my skin breakouts easily.
So will the aqua boost sorbet will be good for me ?

    1. Hi, it doesn’t have any particular properties that help enhance the wear of makeup. Its a normal moisturizer, doesn’t work as a primer or base.

  13. Hi Ankita.. am currently using La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo+ and it’s cleanser morning and night time. My skin is a mixture of combination, sensitive and acne prone along with acne spots and scars. I feel my skin a bit dry after applying LRP. Should I use another moisturiser over LRP and then a sunscreen or just apply only LRP and sunscreen?

    Would really appreciate your response..

    Thank you.

  14. Hey Ankita…..Ur reviews are very helpful. Could u please suggest me a cream which I can use on a regular basis and which will brighten help my skin tone and overcome the dullness and uneven skin tone.

  15. Hi Ankita!
    Thank you for the post.
I have combination skin and I recently purchased the Plum Green Tea Mattifying Moisturizer. It heats up my skin for few seconds while applying. Is it normal?
