Best Moisturizers for Combination-Oily Skin | Skincare Review

Ever since I started taking care of my skin, its been a challenge to find the perfect moisturizer for oily skin. For the longest time, I did not even realise that my oily skin needed a moisturizer. Many women are under the misconception that if they have oily skin, they do not need moisturizer. The truth is, everyone needs moisturizer, you just need the texture and formula suited for your skin type! Moisture/Hydration is different from oil/sebum and if your skin is oily, it doesn’t imply that it is hydrated. Low levels of moisture in the skin leads to overproduction of oil, as the skin tries to compensate for the lack of water. To maintain healthy, balanced skin, its important to hydrate the skin and not strip it dry.

Oily skinned people need to use light-weight moisturizers in the form of lotions, emulsions or gels and should stay away from heavier creams which may clog the pores and lead to pimples and blackheads. My skin oscillates between combination and oily and every once in a while, I get a few angry breakouts that refuse to budge for days. So I’ve tested out a boat load of moisturizers over the past few months and compiled this list of oily skin-friendly moisturizers. I hope you will find this compilation helpful!

Sorry to hear the Lotus one broke you out. My skin care routine has been changing constantly since I’m testing new products all the time but as soon as I settle on something, I’ll do a routine post or video. For hair, its pretty simple. I’m using the Moroccanoil Smoothing Shampoo and conditioner and from time to time, I use the Rene Furterer Melaleuca Anti-Dandruff shampoo. All the of these have been reviewed here.

Hey Ankita.. Beautiful compilation.I have tried Clinique Moisture Surge Gel and its Fa-b-u-l-o-u-s for oily skin. used that for the longest time.
Also the FE Aloe vera light hydrating gel has worked really well. The downside was if you do not dilute it with water its gonna give you a very stretchy feel.
The La Roche posay effaclar duo is fantastic but cannot b used like a regular moisturizer, its more like a treatment product for me!

The Clinique Dramatically different moisturizing gel is quite good but not fantastic.

Hi Ishita, good to know your feedback on these. I personally love the La Roche Posay one as a moisturizer when I’m all oily and breaking out. During my Paris trip with LRP, I had the chance to take a closer look at the ingredients and the making process and they do intend it as a mattifying and purifying moisturizer for oily, blemished skin. Since you have sensitive skin, I suppose it does make more sense to use it a spot treatment.

Your blog is my go to place before buying any makeup or skin/haircare product, your product reviews are great.
I have been a fan of body shop for years now, given my extremely oily skin their team tree mattyfying moisturiser is my saviour in summers, vitamin E aqua boost sorbet in spring-autumn and vitamin E moisturiser during winters. Not to forget the tea tree BB cream is a great foundation alternative for everyday use.
Please do a natio product review, have seen you using them in makeup tutorials but couldn’t find any review on the blog.

    Hi Ankita ,
I have recently ordered vitamin E aqua boost sorbet and i have combination skin (oily tea zone n normal rest) but i offen get a pimple or two on forehead area or on cheeks , which leaves marks and my skin breakouts easily.
So will the aqua boost sorbet will be good for me ?

    • Ankita Srivastava
      September 10, 2016 / 6:32 pm

Hi, the Aqua Boost Sorbet wont help with marks. Go for the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo for acne prone skin.

Hi, it doesn’t have any particular properties that help enhance the wear of makeup. Its a normal moisturizer, doesn’t work as a primer or base.

Hi Ankita.. am currently using La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo+ and it’s cleanser morning and night time. My skin is a mixture of combination, sensitive and acne prone along with acne spots and scars. I feel my skin a bit dry after applying LRP. Should I use another moisturiser over LRP and then a sunscreen or just apply only LRP and sunscreen?

    Would really appreciate your response..

    Thank you.
